Being a solo manufacturer is only 5% building, and then 95% business. If you are smart, creative and do a lot of local market research, you will find minerals much cheaper than average through module and ship buy orders, and you will build only the things that are in demand, in sets that people want or that they will use.
Find a somewhat-used lvl 4 agent that isn't near the big trading hubs. See if ammo and drones are sold there. If not, you're find that people will pay well above market if it saves them travel time.
Same with other things. If you're selling Rifters, make sure you're selling MWDs, guns, etc at the same station. If you're selling indies, make sure you're selling 10MN ABs, nanofibres and expander 1s at that station too (and even better, sell 'em at a Navy Station where cans are sold as well).
People will pay MORE, much more, if they can get everything they need at one place. Hell, if I'm at a new agent and get a 1K m3 hauling mission, if you have a Sigil on site, for sale, I'll pay 200K extra for it rather than go 3 jumps, and if I do have to travel I'll pay extra either for ships or modules if I can put a good fitting on the ship to go home with, IF they're all at the same station. One guy I know sells even his tech II stuff as a package, and while his price is probably not bad overall, it is even more popular because you arrive at the station and pick up a PvP ship and bundled with it is the most common and effective PvP fitting for that ship. Wildly popular.
Now this requires that YOU FIND IT INTERESTING. Even in real life, manufacturing is hardly a key to wealth and power. You can lose your shirt, if not your house if you build without customers, without good sales and marketing.
I know a few people who LOVE the art of the deal. They're PE5 and all that, but their main game is buying low and selling high, and outsmarting the competition (or better yet, finding a niche no one is exploiting). If you find that fun, great. If not, manufacturing skills are only useful to a large corp that builds for internal needs, to a large commercial corp that would love your help and has their own marketing people, or to yourself if you build your own ammo and drones for those missions.
So you need to decide what aspect of manufacturing appealed to you. If it's building stuff for the fun of it, you can build your own ammo and stuff. If its getting rich, honestly, your luck will be better NPCing in 0.0, doing missions for a good lvl4 or mining.
